Phul jiven parwah nahin karda naal khalote kharaan di;
Parwaah nahin karde bhagat hari de edaan duniyandaran di.
Bol nahi ehde thothe hunde duniyan vangun baajh amal;
Duniyan de vich edaan rehnda jyon jal wich nirlep kamal.
Chandan nahin jyon khushboo chhad da vich rahe chaahe bansan de;
Rehnda naal ey naam hari da aundai jaande swasan de.
Paani de vich rahe murgaabi lep nahin hunda paani da;
Kahe avtar nahi lep bhagat nun maya bharam bhulani da.

Just as a flower remains indifferent to the thorns by its side;
Likewise, the devotee of God does not feel bothered by the worldly people.
Unlike the world, whatever he speaks is not hollow, not matched with action;
He lives in this material world totally detached like lotus in water.
Just as the sandalwood does not give up its fragrance even though surrounded by the
bamboos;
Likewise, the devotee of God remembers God's name by every breath.
Just as the duck living in water remains aloft it;
Avtar says, likewise, the devotee of God is not influenced by the illusion of thematerial world.

Meaning
Here Baba Avtar Singh ji gives the difference between a saint and a person who does not have God knowledge. He talks about two things that come from the same source, yet they live differently.
Just like the flower that does not bother the thorns, in the same way a saint does not let the worldly people influence him. The example of lotus that remains disconnected with the water says that the devotee is also disconnected with the worldly things but still remains beautiful. The sandalwood does not leave its fragrance (aroma) even though it is surrounded by bamboos. A duck too lives in water but still remains unaffected by it. All these examples prove that though a devotee lives in this world of pleasure, he keeps himself away from all distraction and concentrates on the Almighty.
Thus, he concludes by saying that a saint is always dependant on God and does not get influenced by the things around him.
